The evolution and rise of Huawei has been talked for some time. Not only do we mean their success of sales with terminals such as the P8 Lite or mate 7, we also have to take into account their trajectory, as well as the change of strategy that they have carried out in recent years.
If it used to be a brand that was distinguished by having a portfolio of entry-range devices with a more than acceptable price, the company is now betting heavily on the high and medium-end sector.
Precisely at this last point is its latest family of products: Nova, a line that is distinguished by being phones for everyday life, with a good design and a large camera.
Some people say that these smartphones are focused on a female audience and, although it is true that they incorporate a couple of tools specially designed for women, they are phones that everyone can use.
In our case we have had the opportunity to try the Nova Plus, the older brother, which is distinguished by having a screen larger than his companion, as well as a better camera and a battery with more capacity.
If you want to know what we liked this smartphone, very attentive to this analysis of the Huawei Nova Plus.
Premium design
The curved surface of the Huawei Nova Plus and its 5.5-inch display blend together to create an ergonomic and compact design. However, being a phablet type, it is difficult to use it with one hand, but not impossible.
As counted in the presentation of the phone in IFA, the lines of this terminal are based on the modern architecture, which results in its back having a polished metal finish and an oval panel that extends to the top of the phone. The feeling in the hand is quite pleasant and, although it has a soft texture, it is not especially slippery.
The dimensions of the Nova Plus are not exaggerated (151.8 x 75.7x 7.3 mm), which makes it a slim and very well-gotten smartphone. However, weight is already another matter. We have to keep in mind that it is a 5.5 inch phone and that makes the terminal not as light as others. Despite this, its 160 grams can make uncomfortable for some pockets.
The device lacks physical buttons at the front of the terminal, causing the equipment to be operated with a trio of touch switches located at the bottom of the screen. The frames are almost imperceptible, and we have to say that the use of space is quite achieved.
Apart from this, on one side we find the volume button and the on/off button that, as with other terminals of the brand, have a different touch from each other.
At the top Huawei bets on the Jack for headphones, unlike Apple. At the other end are the slots for the SIM and SD and finally, at the bottom, we can see the port for USB Type-C as well as two speakers.
If there’s one thing that sounds like a hit in this Nova Plus is that Huawei has decided to incorporate a 3D fingerprint reader on the back of the terminal. The operation is especially fast and safe, since it not only takes into account the drawing that forms your fingerprint, but also tests the endidura of it. This not only will you gain in productivity, but increase the security of your device.
FullHD display
Again, Huawei is betting on FullHD screens again. Thus, the NOVA Plus IPS LCD panel is 5.5 inches, implying that it has a density of 440 dpi. This will allow us to see the contents that we play at a more than acceptable quality.
It is true that the company has again opted for the same resolution that its previous devices already incorporated, even the high-end ones, but still does not fall short in terms of quality. However, we have tested equipment with better screens, such as the Galaxy Note 7.
What was the result? The lighting of the screen indoors is excellent, but the outdoor lighting leaves a little to be desired. In this sense, the automatic brightness fits perfectly in the first case, but in the second case we preferred manual configuration.
In short, we have been able to see in this review of the Huawei Nova Plus that we are facing a clear and precise screen, which will respond quite well when running any app, video games or video.
Its protection is provided by Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which will help the terminal protect itself from bumps and scratches.
Selfie camera, star feature
One of the differences between the Nova Plus and its younger brother is the camera. While the first features a 16 megapixel sensor on the main f/2.2 aperture, the Nova comes with 12 megapixels. In this sense, the difference is noticeable. It also features optical image stabilizer, auto focus and a Pro mode that allows you to select up to focus mode.
The results we have obtained are quite good and have nothing to want from other mid-range terminals. In this sense, it should be emphasized that the comparison with the P9 is obvious and that, although we have had better snapshots, the Huawei Nova Plus is a good rival.
Thus, it has a number of quite interesting modes. For example, for those who love social apps (such as Instagram), you have an option called «Good Food» that will make the dishes you photograph as appartic. There is also an option to adjust the documents you photograph, a very useful way to not have to scan all the files you need to send quickly.
Also, and as with the P8, it has some modes such as Light Sting, Light Graffiti, Soft Waters and Star Sting. These will allow us to perform unusual effects with very original results, although in our day to day they will be difficult to use.
That said, we have to say that the camera stands out. Not as much as other models we’ve seen (iPhone 7), but the fact is that this leaves this part of the terminal a little unsafe.
But if there’s one thing that sets this phone apart from the rest of the mid-range, it’s its 8-megapixel front camera. It incorporates a couple of modes that will allow users to make up digitally to get more favored in selfies. The first of these is Makeup 2.0, which will allow us to apply cosmetic effects (eye shadows, lipstick, blusc. The second is Beauty Mode 3.0, which will make us have a face without imperfections.
In addition, if you are one of those who usually become groufies, you can apply these filters without having to make up your teammates. That is, the camera software perfectly recognizes your face.
We have to say that, in general, the results are quite natural, except for a couple of effects that are somewhat excessive.
